There should be a movie franchise named after this... *Adak starts coming out from a bush in the back as he listens to the conversation go more and more towards Star Wars*

Here it was pure snow. A couple inches worth, at least.

I hope it doesn’t turn out like it did last year....... the river flooded as the snow melted, and entire neighborhoods went underwater.

Found a few colonies today. Here's my finds so far:

Aphaenogaster carolinensis: 1 queen, 6 workers
Temnothorax americana: 1 queen, 10 host workers
Temnothorax curvispinosus: 2 queens, 100 workers

Formica integra (Colony #1)
3-21-20

They have 15-16 host workers, 2 biological workers (took from under their old rock, as there are still 30 or so biological workers and a single queen, waiting to be captured this week) and about 100 eggs and larvae. This queen is insanely productive! I can't imagine what they'll look like with both their queens in the Mini Hearth!

The Prenolepis flew 3 months ago in SoCal. Naturally, I wasn't able to go to the mountains at the time.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

It appears parasitic queens are much more productive.

I will be getting a colony of Proceratium soon, once I get a few house spiders to lay eggs.

Perhaps you should keep a couple eggs around and breed them, so you don’t always have to find more spiders to keep the colony alive.

I collected 2 Myrmica colonies today, after much searching. Only 1 (the largest colony) contains a queen. She has about 150 workers and a ton of larvae.

Camponotus nearcticus (Colony #1)
3-22-20

Well. She didn't produce anything since August, and her colony slowly died. I tossed her into the freezer along with her last two majors. I suspect she hybridized with a Camponotus snellingi male, as her workers were very strange.
