Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

you realize you can never release the fire ant colony because its a danger to the ecosystem right?

Yes sir/ma'am. I was under the impression we do not release any type of ant colony same as fish from aquaria. We are to keep them till they expire or traded.

Also being in SC I have like 10 fire ant mounds in my own front/back yard right now. Spent $60 a year for years now for the big bag of Amdro. They are considered pests here. However I know they are easy to keep for first timer so that's why I want to buy. I will be on the lookout for queens during nuptial flights next spring. Thinking I will be able to catch shall we say "a lot" in my area but will see.

For some reason some of the fire ants in the grassy areas have just recently built tall cone like mounds and the temp was just 36 degrees yesterday.

Just checking, better safe than sorry. They do get more difficult as the colony grows, so this will be a good learning experience for you...

I would like a Camponotous but didn't want to invest $40+ on single queen as a newbie keeper.

Aw man, I feel bad for you! Well, next season I will truly find out if my one Camponotus queen is fertile or not. Going to be very interesting. I'll need to take some pics. btw, the queen of the larger colony has fallen over in diapause and workers fell over on top of her  :rofl2:

Just wanted to put out a trade review. I met with Mr. Ferox today and got 1 tube RIFA 4 Queens & 2 tubes with a Single Crematogaster sp. (Acrobat Ant) Queen each.

The trade was very painless. He answered a few more questions for which I am grateful. I am sure I will have tons more questions but will keep researching and learning. I highly recommend him as a trader/seller.

THANKS FEROX!!

P.S. I told my wife what species was in the test tubes she held AFTER we got home.......

I wouldn't sell a potentially queen less colony for that much.
