When are the best times of day to go catching Ant Queens? I know there are a lot of variables but typically what do you guys find is the best time of day or night? 

 

I guess the reason I'm asking is I've been looking for Queens but have only ever found the one. I'm new to this so that probably has a lot to do with it but I'm looking to improve and any advice y'all may have would be appreciated. Times, Locations. methods. etc.

Depending on the type, early morning, late noon, and the evening/night work best for me.

It’s very species specific. Your next big flight will be Tetramorium. They’ll be everywhere early mornings in mid-June. The other queens I found in our region were Formica around 12:00pm mid-July and Crematogaster around 2:00pm Labor Day weekend. Queen season is just getting started, so don’t worry. I guarantee you’ll find more.

Ok so is it safe to say that if you are searching places where you see the Species of ant you want you are searching the right areas at least? I'm mostly trying to find Camponotus Queens right now. Although Formica Subsericea would be good too.

Like today I searched twice at a local park. Once between 5:30 and 6:30pm and the next from like 9:45 -11:00pm 

I regularly see C, castaneus, pennsylvanicus, chromaiodes at the park. so I just got to get luck y right?

 

I think tomorrow evening will be good here it'll get like 80 and we had a few days of rain.

Ants don't fly on windy days. Most Camponotus fly at night too. Formica fly in the morning to afternoon, and are easier to get to a good size.

Yeah still no luck      tired today after 4 until around 7 at a different park. definitely saw ants just no queens. Guess I'll try again tonight
