I went out to near the junction of the 18 and the 138 this morning/afternoon, didn't really find anything ant-wise. A supposed founding chamber turned up what look like two small drones (waspish, still have wings, small heads, etc.) which I'll be working to identify.

Interested to hear how Smoke Tree Road turns out. I live so close, yet so far...

Thanks,

I think that’s because desert ants normally fly the next day in the afternoon/evening

It rained yesterday and I was out today, though I was only out till around 12:00. The area I was in also didn't have a lot of ant colonies. Je ne sais pas.

Anyway, it's raining in Hesperia.

Thanks,

I'm not sure Hesperia is probably the best place to go anting as its heavily developed.

Agreed. I am going to Phelan. Then 15 miles east of it. Developed places have Argentine ants because of the water sources.

But some of the rain, based on accuweather will also go over Phelan and Cajon too.

I know right. I wish it happened in July when I wasn’t stressed about school starting. Are you heading out? I need to look quick before it gets dark. But I brought a flashlight. I’m going to try to go to Palmdale tomorrow.

Yeah I am heading out finally lol. Kind of lost half a hour trying to look for a really good first aid kit I knew was somewhere. Hopefully I could head to Lancaster, or was it Palmdale? Wherever it is was where somebody found some M. mexicanus queens.

Also quick thing for anybody going to Phelan, make sure to have a mask on all time when anting, not just because of COVID but also because of the the relatively poor air quality reported there. It’s just healthier to wear a mask out there.

Same results here in Phelan, but I found Myrmecoystus cf. Mimicus, A large black Camponotus species, Pogomyrmex rugosus, Pogomyrmex californicus, a medium sized brown blocky headed Pogomyrmex species, and one unidentifiable other black Myrmecoystus sp.

Strangely, there were tons of small colonies and a bunch of mature colonies of all the ants mentioned below all in very close proximity.
No queens though :( as you said

You know, I saw many ants of completely different colonies and species walk into each other, and then turn around and ignore each other. The only time I saw a fight is when a few of the Pogonomyrmex accidentally walked into one of the black Camponotus species nest.
