And say there was a monsoon/thunderstorm passed through... say, Palmdale desert, the day after, the alates SHOULD fly if it it sunny, correct? Or should I go two days after.

When would you go.
Some time within 3 days after it rains, depending on all sorts of things, like the weather, the location, my work schedule, the species I'm after, etc.
I can only give a specific answer to a specific question.

This was supposed to be a road...
Amazingly, I actually found queens running around in all this wind too.
This is one of the most remote spots in the Mojave Desert. For miles along this part of highway 62 you can't see a single man-made thing in any direction, other than the road.

We get that every year or so, except on paved, major roads........

What would be the nearest city?
Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.
However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:
Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Yeah well, so far it's not looking good this summer. Is this the desert trip you guys were planning on taking?

I'm just bummed because it doesn't look like there's going to be much monsoon action so I have no idea how I would schedule a trip to look for them. Maybe high humidity?
