Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.
However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:
Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).
What would be flying? Veromessor?

For what it is worth, in the case of a good percentage of Camponotus you not only need workers but you need major workers as well. With minor workers many of the key features overlap enough so as to not be useful.
So would the majors have different proportions of heads or other body features, then?
"God made..... all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds (including ants). And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:25 NIV version

Looks like this thursday it will hit 80-81 with a low of 57 in the oak/wooded areas near san diego. I am thinking that it will be too cold for Camponotus species to fly that night, given the still low temperature at night. What do you guys think?
The antguy14 got a couple of us together to catch some of the Veromessers that flew in MoVal in the evening of 2/24. We dug up a few more last night
Anyone catch veromessor yet?

Went out tonight (2/27) from 730 to 930 pm to areas of oak groves in pala and escondido, where previously i had seen some camponotus ants. Unfortunately didn't see any alates, in fact i barely saw any ants at all. Definitely was warm enough (hit 85 in pala), and some areas had a small creek (so had humidity). Maybe its too early in the year or maybe there just arent enough camponotus ants where i went looking.

Heading to Carlsbad for weekend. Any hotspots worth checking out, perhaps by heading east?

I know nothing about Carlsbad but you might be able to dig up founding chambers.
