If it heats up again, I'll probably just go try black lighting again in the canyon closer to me. As we get closer to summer, there should be more and more Solenopsis, Brachymyrmex, Nylanderia, Hypoponera, Pheidole, and Temnothorax species starting to fly in the lower elevations. You never know what other much less often found species you might come across with the black light. A couple times I even found some parasitic Lasius in the foothills. If I'm lucky, I might find some of those massive Camponotus that are all over that area.

 

Didn't you find some large male Camponotus alates at Trabuco other day? Wouldn't that mean they have flown?

 

You look for those every year and have yet to find them. Starting to believe they exist only in your imagination.

Yeah,  I saw two males that I'm pretty sure were that species. Seeing a couple males doesn't mean they had their main mating flight though.

 

I just checked and when we found a few female alates last year it was June 2nd and 3rd. I forgot it was that much later than all the other Camponotus. At least now I know we probably still have a chance to find them.

The desert is mountain ranges and valleys away from Oceanside. Do you mean the Anza Borrego area?

I saw a Myrmecocystus mexicanus queen just a week or two ago out in Palm Springs. Sadly, she disappeared seconds before I could get her. She went down her founding chamber hole (she was digging her nest). I tried getting her, but sadly must have went into the crack of the sidewalk. It wasn't a Pogonomyrmex queen as those look completely different, because she looked just like that picture.

Actually saw her on the 18th of this month, as that was when I came back from the Salton Sea. I didn't see any others sadly.

Not really. I don't really see how they could be flying this early. If someone finds a queen then I think there must be some other explanation.

Hm, I'm pretty sure I saw one in Palm Springs. But since I couldn't get a picture or even catch her, she could have been something else with the same coloring. She was yellow, and pretty big.

Big rain in trabuco canyon, elsinore, and temecula today. warming up on wednesday, does anyone want to go anting thursday or friday evening? I'd like to go with one of the veterans so I can learn a thing or two!
