Nice. You got the most Colas out of all of us. There was a spot with tons of C. Laevigatus a few miles further up the trail that I showed Soysauce and his son. There were so many I stopped collecting them.

There were plenty of laevigatus last night. If you go hike in the Icehouse trail, look on all the dead oak logs.

They're pine logs. Strictly pine. I don't think I've ever seen them nesting in anything smaller than about 3 feet in diameter and 8 or so feet long either. I'm sure there are some, but the vast majority are only in really large logs.

Oh yeah, what Drew said.

I'm feeling kind of conflicted. I'm feeling like crap cuz I only got like 3 hours of sleep last night but I'm thinking about going back up there tonight to see if there are anymore Coca Colas. We only got one last night.

So my crazy [censored] went back there tonight, and what a difference a day makes! I got there around 8:30p and did not see one vicinus queen at all, which was crazy considering the hundreds we saw only the night before. I hung around that parking lot area and only found 2 quercicolas, which were the queens I was looking for so I considered myself fortunate.

I didn't go up the trail at all so I don't know if the laevigatus were out, but I doubt it. It was definitely cooler tonight and a bit of a marine layer. I only stayed for about an hour. It took me that long to finally realize how insane it was for me to be up there again!

Just an hour? So disappointed in you Soysauce.

But seriously, two Colas in an hour is not bad.

Well, you definitely got some information I really wanted. This means we are definitely going at the right time... at least everybody but SoySauce. I often wonder how long these flights last for, and if we are really hitting up the spot on the exact day. It appears we are.  :D

Hey guys I just wanted to thank all of you for posting and letting us all know where all the action is.Last night I went to the Icehouse trail at MT Baldy at around 7:30 PM and stayed until 8:30  I walked the trail until I passed the first cabin#10 and that is where I found all of these I believe it is 8 C. Vicinus,4 C. laevigatus, and I think they are 3 C. sansabeanus and 1 of another smaller kind of species. They were all over I didn't have to use my shovel once :D. Sorry I could not include any photos for some reason it says I do not have permission to upload the file type.

That's great SanBernadino.  Yeah, there was ten times as much there the night before.

So there's going to be another mini-heat wave this coming weekend too.  I don't know if it'll be as hot as last weekend though.  Where we going this time around???

I'd love to tag along sometime, is this the best thread to follow for anting missions in the area?

If it heats up again, I'll probably just go try black lighting again in the canyon closer to me. As we get closer to summer, there should be more and more Solenopsis, Brachymyrmex, Nylanderia, Hypoponera, Pheidole, and Temnothorax species starting to fly in the lower elevations. You never know what other much less often found species you might come across with the black light. A couple times I even found some parasitic Lasius in the foothills. If I'm lucky, I might find some of those massive Camponotus that are all over that area.
