I would think everything will be done, since Acromyrmex already flew (there is a chance that they were fly again) but everything else probably won't fly.
Interested buying in ants? Feel free to check out my shop!
Feel free to read my journals, like this one.
Wishlist:
Atta sp (wish they were in CA), Crematogaster cerasi, Most Pheidole species

That’s strange because I would assume they would fly throughout the week instead of all on a day or two, but do you think it is worth it to check Joshua tree out on Sunday?

Well is there going to be any sort of camponotus flying?
Camponotus fragilis and C. ocreatus.

If you want to dig queens up, you might find a few Sunday, but it gets more difficult by the hour once they close up their chambers.
I think there could still be some more mating flights of some species. Some smaller species seem to fly in small numbers every time the conditions are right. Also, the species that fly late in the year should still fly. I never saw any Myrmecocystus yuma while I was out, so they probably haven't flown yet. I usually find them in September.

Will Phiedole hyatti fly after this rain in the foot hills?
I got a Pheidole hyatti queen while I was out.

What month or months do Camponotus semitestaceus fly? What are the conditions needed for a flight to occur? And to catch queen I need to go at 8-9PM, right?
#2391 Offline - Posted August 26 2023 - 5:43 PM
It depends on which Camponotus "semitestaceus" you are wanting to catch. Some fly spring, some fly summer.

He's probably aiming for the fall-flying ones, like I am. I remember a conversation we had about catching these. Not sure if their conditions are different in SoCal or not though. I don't know much even about the NorCal ones up here.

Can you tell when they fly from a picture? If so heres two.

Also, I doubt these are the summer ones as I went after the big storm at like 8:20pm, unless they fly earlier in the summer.

Looks like we have some rain in Joshu Tree area as well as Imperial Valley.
Any chance of some flights anywhere?

Yesterday I drove from Yucca Valley through Palm Springs back down to San Diego. Complete bust!
I saw some Pheidole flying in the mountains by Pinyon Pines, which makes me think a black light would have worked there. Everything else was pretty washed out from the rain. Didn’t have luck with a single founding chamber.
I’d say our desert anting season is done.

Lame because the monsoons are finally here. Still had a great weekend and found some spots I’ll be returning to when the conditions are right.
