I just collected a medium sized colony of Pheidole bicarinata from under a stone. The queen looks very fat and healthy, and there are about 20 gyne alate pupa! I will put them in something a bit smaller and fully closed in, as these ants can escape through tiny holes.

What kind of area did you find them in?

I found them under one stone in a series of stones that were laid out through a pine needle bed around a Callery Pear Tree. The soil was a sort of a 1 part sand 1 part regular soil mix, and rather dry at that.

There was a large die off this morning, the queen was included in the casualties. I will keep the colony though as I want to see if I could possibly breed one of the alate queens and have her as the queen.
