It's just a flat rock on the Formica mound.

Formica dolosa #2
The original colony is polygynous! There was a second queen under the trap today! Now, should I take the new queen and workers and start a second colony as a backup, or combine them. I think the colony scent has changed too much though.

I say go with your instincts. If you think the change in scent is too great. Definitely start another.
I still need to know what a Formica trap is too! LOL

Formica dolosa (polygynous)
They still have the same colony scent! They are a polygynous colony again.

Formica dolosa #2
So I checked the trap again, and another queen!? I took her and some workers, and put them alone in a test tube setup. Now I have 2 colonies of these. One is polygynous, with 2 queens. If I get more, they will go to colony #1.

There is no way I am doing any harm to the ecosystem. This colony has many queens, and this is one of the most common ants in Tennessee. They are everywhere.

Formica pacifica #1
First male alate yesterday! They apparently have a huge appetite. I am getting them back when I move back to Washington, along with my Formica subsericea, Camponotus noveaboracensis and Myrmica colonies.

Formica pacifica #1
They have gained over 100 workers since the last update, and now have 10 alates. The queen laid around 400 eggs, and are finally producing workers again, and no more alate larvae.
