When I wasn't really in the hobby yet, I was on of those people who think: red ant=FIRE ANT RUN (don't judge I was like 7 and stupid)
I thought that my first queen ( Prenolepis imparis) was a Tetramorium species.
"If an ant carries an object a hundred times it's weight, you can carry burdens many times your size.
Put a Pogonomyrmex queen inside a test tube with no seeds, sand, or heat. Thought it was a big species of solenopsis. Didn't check to see if it was semi-claustral or not lmao
When I was really new to ants I used to go collect them in my yard, and a Nylanderia queen that I caught was a Lasuis queen. I didn't even know what species of lasuis it was even though I thought it was lasuis lol.
I had Nylanderia flavipes and I thought that they were Brachymyrmex depilis for the longest time. I also thought that Vollenhovia emeryi was Ponera pennsylvanica.
I thought a Strumigenys queen was a S. molesta queen

When I caught my first queen I spent weeks trying to figure out if it was Crematogaster, Lasius or Tapinoma Sessile (It was Crematogaster)

I used to get Aphaenogaster and Myrmica confused.
"God made..... all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds (including ants). And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:25 NIV version
Keeping:
Formica cf. pallidefulva, cf. incerta, cf. argentea
Formica cf. aserva, cf. subintegra
Myrmica sp.
Lasius neoniger, brevicornis
I thought my Aphaenogaster occidentalis queen was a Tetramorium immigrans queen at first. Wasn't until workers arrived that my suspicions of her not being T. immigrans were confirmed.
Currently kept species
L. neoniger, P. occidentalis, C. modoc, C. novaeboracensis, C. vicinus, T. immigrans, A. occidentalis, S. molesta, P. imparis, M. kennedyi, M semirufus, F. pacifica, P. californica, M. ergatogyna.
Previously kept species
T. rugatulus, B. depilis.
Looking for
Myrmecocystus pyramicus, Myrmecocystus testaceus
Pheidole creightoni, Pheidole inquilina, Crematogaster coarctata, Crematogaster mutans
I identified Camponotus eastwoodi as Camponotus humilior until I found a real Camponotus humilior. They are smaller in size than Camponotus eastwoodi and look practically identical.
Favourite Genus: Polyrhachis

May God Bless you.
The first time I saw a Prenolepis imparis worker, I misidentified it as Lasius neoniger... and I also thought it was a queen, since its gaster was pretty large compared to its body.

I thought formica where Camponotus and ended up killing a queen because of that
