Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies. 

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

I don't like insanus, they look a bit too much like argentines for my liking. But, bicolor look really nice, going to try quite hard to get some queens this year.

However, it looks much too round to be Tapinoma sessile. Could it possibly be some other species of Dorymyrmex? I can try to get better photos of a worker as soon as I find some more.

The queen looks nothing like smithi, and neither do the workers. I would guess grandulus.

While the worker may very well be Dorymyrmex, the queen is not. She looks to be some kind of Formicinae, but I'd need a better picture to be certain. The best way to differentiate Dorymyrmex workers from all other genera is to look at the propodeum. If it has a tooth on it, it is Dorymyrmex. Even the other closely related Dolichoderinae genera do not have this tooth.

The queen looks to be Nylanderia to me. No way to tell for sure with that picture though.

It's the other way around -- Tapinoma sessile is the stockier of the two, Dorymyrmex is slender. Dorymyrmex is also highly unlikely to be found foraging inside a house; in the extreme northern parts of their range they favor open areas with sandy soil that are typically relatively untouched by humans. The sharp, pointed cone shape on the propodeum of Dorymyrmex workers is also the best indicator if your'e able to get a side profile picture of the workers.

Worker looks like T. sessille, and would fit our location a lot better. They are often found wondering around houses. Queen doesn't however...
