I never knew there were permits for that. I understand the scientific point of it. It just seems kinda risky still. I hope everyone is using a full proof escape barrier.

Congrats on your PPQ 526 Permit! How long did it take to get it? I'm looking into getting one.

It takes normally 1 month, but I had to do it twice as I was missing some details they wanted clarification on, so it took me 2 months. (Also, I will change my signature to be 2ish lines, thanks for the advice!)

It is typically a very specific exemption to the Plant Protection Act, issued by the Secretary of Agriculture to the named permit holder.

For example, it may allow the permit holder to receive and maintain live specimens of a designated plant pest species or genus that is not normally found in the permit holder's state, provided certain requirements are met, such as containment or disposition protocols.

These permits are never a license to sell or distribute ants to non-permit holders, so be very wary of anyone who claims to possess a permit allowing them to sell ants across state lines—such a license does not exist.

Some permits are so specific as to name the origin of the specimen.  For example, someone seeking to transport Myrmecocystus wheeleri from California to Iowa, via hand carry only, for a specific duration (i.e. expiring Dec 31, 2019), with the specimens to be contained in a specific way, and be disposed of a specific way.

These permits are not something that is necessary or feasible for 99.9% of people.

So if someone from the US got a permit for an ant native to Australia, they would likely have to go there and then personally take it back? Or ask someone to take it to them.

In most circumstances, you are not going to be issued a permit for ants outside the continental US, unless you have a BSL-3 containment facility that is inspected and approved by the USDA.
