I was just wondering if there are any alternative food sources such as dog food etc?

Typically ants prefer to have food with some sort of liquids in them so they can drink from it and it is also easier for the larvae to breakdown (I think it is easier, I can't say for sure).  There are some "artificial" diets out there like the powdered foods you mix with water, but ultimately insects and a varied diet of different insects is preferred; make sure to provide sugars if they need it and varied seeds if they eat seeds.
