I found this queen in November in a log. She laid a few eggs in January, and now has 10 workers and 60 brood.

Any tips on founding these? Specifically, how often did you check the queen to keep her from getting stressed?

Wow. So your queen’s not skittish. I’m nervous hearing about Metcollsuss’ queen eating all her pupae. I’ve been checking mine every two or three weeks. They all have good egg piles, but it’s taking longer than I expected.

That happens with all ants every once in a while. A C. modoc queen I had years ago did that. She did get workers eventually.

They now have over 100 brood and 15 workers. :) Also, I found out these are actually Crematogaster ashmeadi .

If you found the queen in a log, she’s likely C. cerasi/lineolata. C. ashmeadi nests almost exclusively off the ground. Look for spines of moderate length and sculpturing on the mesosoma of workers to confirm the former species. C. ashmeadi lacks sculpturing and has fairly short spines.

They have a huge amount of brood now! I'm guessing about 200 brood, 40 workers and the queen. Their tube is really dirty right now, so pics are bad.

They are moving into the Mini Hearth! I also found another queen. If anyone in Tennessee wants her, I can trade or sell! Also, I heard these are polygynus.
