So just recently my Camponotus Clarithorax queen died

I bought this colony from Drew in 2017. I suspect that he caught them in 2016. 6 months earlier I found out about AntsCanada. He randomly showed up on my Youtube recommended list. I then clicked on it then 20 minutes later I realized ant keeping was perfect for me. I then showed it to my parents and they thought it was cool. Before I knew about ant keeping I was already into bugs so that's why my parents were fine with ants. Then after 6 months of watching AntsCanada I decided that I wanted to buy ants because I couldn't find any queens. I heard about Drew in one of his videos so I wanted to hit him up. Then on mothers day we were going to Orange County so I asked if I could buy a Camponotus Clarithorax colony from him. Why that colony, I don't know. We then showed up and he gave me the colony and a 3D printed feeder.

At the time I thought that all ants hibernated. At the time I was pretty dumb so I had no clue what colonies needed what. I had the colony for a while and they were doing super good. I only had 1 egg that didn't turn out good. At the time I had 12 workers or something.

Then winter came. Before I had my ants I was already not looking forward to the winter. Even now I hate the winter because of not watching my ants. But then I hibernated my ants. Like I said I didn't know that this species didn't hibernate. Then 3 months later I took them out and 4 ants were dead and I had 7 ants. Since I had an AC starter pack so I tried moving them. Over time they never moved and more ants died. So I disconnect the AC setup and tried formicuture. I figured out I couldn't do anything so over the next year they all died. I wish that I knew how to keep them better and hope nobody else does something as stupid as I did.

This is a great thread. Usually people only want to share thier sucesses. This is a good example of what can happen when you rush into a hobby without taking the time in doing the proper research. So thank you for openly and honestly sharing your experience. Perhaps others can learn from this blunder.

If you catch them again, do NOT put them in nurbs pencil case formicariums. Mrymentoma Camponotus are pretty flat, and can escape through the small gaps in the case. I gave my clarithorax queen to YsTheAnt. It was my first ant colony.
