I found a really cool colony of these Pogonomyrmex californicus (concolorous variation) in a river bed just north of Simi Valley. I took some cool pictures and made this video, which I feel captures them better than the images, so it was uploaded earlier.

 

But I got around to the pictures too. I hope the next time they fly I can catch some queens. Just about every species of Pogonomyrmex would be great to have, and since this is such a mature colony, I will be watching them to see if they make alates this year, as it has been pretty decent rain wise.

Maybe feed them some food and hopefully they will send out a queen or two sooner. That is, a handful of seeds may help.

Only Linepithema humile do that, which luckily have not been introduced into Simi Valley yet.
