I am trying to ID the Myrmica colony I received from Crystal.

I've taken three up-close shots of a dead worker. The species is from Alberta and Crystal had a link to antweb alberta -> http://www.antweb.or...ect=albertaants

Link to all Myrmica ants -> http://www.antweb.or...oject=worldants

From my own observation, it is either Myrmica latifrons or Myrmica detritinodis

Get a really good full face shot like the ones on antweb.

Your main keys are the facial ridge patterns, the clypeus shape, whether the top of the head is round or flat, and the antennae shape.

Also get a good clear shot of the petiole.

I tried to take pictures like Antweb, but it didn't come out too good. My tool is a 20 dollar microscope and it's pushing its limit.

Here is another problem. I cannot tell the difference between latifrons and detritinodis. Those look completely identical to me. I counted antenna segments, compared legs, compared petiole. Those look identical.

Today, I received A field guide to ants of New England book recommended by Mercutia. The book is all about IDing ants.

After reading Mytmica sp section, I believe this species is Myrmica latifrons.
