I found two winged Temnothorax curvispinosus queens at my porch light tonight. The first one I caught has already shed her wings, the other was trying to fly away, so she's most likely infertile. I'm gonna keep them inside of a little walnut with a plastic screen in front so I can see them.

Have they laid any eggs yet?

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies. 

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Good find! I think these would be cool in a tiny terrarium.

I think so too, especially if you cut a few acorns in half and pressed them onto the side of the glass, so that you could see them.

I think so too, especially if you cut a few acorns in half and pressed them onto the side of the glass, so that you could see them.

That's actually what I plan on doing. I do something similar with twig-dwelling ants.

 

Have they laid any eggs yet?

I'm not sure. The queens have retreated into the walnut I gave them, and I can no longer see them.

Got two large colonies last night from inside dead hickory nuts. One has alates, and I have yet to extract the other colony.

You could make a cool mini-terrarium like Serpadesign does on YouTube and put these in there.
