I collected a dealate gyne of Trachymyrmx septentrionalis recently. She was found in the space between the duff layer covering a large rock and the rock itself. No fungus/larvae etc was found with her. I currently have her cooled down for the winter but will need to get her a bit of starter fungus next year I assume. My understanding of this species is in its northern distribution limits the fungus gardens may die back to where only small quantities are kept by the ants, overwintered with them, then restarted in the spring while the ants in the southern distribution areas especially in Florida, Louisiana and Texas may simply carry full fungus gardens through. I do not remember this summer noticing any colonies due to their distinct mounds, so just in case I cannot find any mounds next spring from which I could collect some fungus myself, I would like to arrange to get some starter fungus from a group member as soon as the weather picks up here in East Tennessee i.e. Spring 2019. Please contact me via chat if you are kindly able to assist.
