I found two more orange hypoponera. It looks like they are all workers. They are different from H. opacior in that they forage far from the nest. I have yet two see two workers in close proximity. (There was a 10 foot difference and yet they recognized each other as belonging to they same colony without the initial hesitation that H. opacior display when fusing colonies.)

orange hypoponera make large nests with scattered tunnels and chambers near the surface only a centimeter or so down.

I found a founding colony of Colobopsis mississippiensis up in an ash tree! I worked EXTREMELY hard to get up into that tree, and it payed off! The colony has the queen, a single worker, lots of brood, and a major worker. I'm not sure if that major is from their colony though, and it may be a stray one.

This was the first one. On the Mississippi Entomological Museum website, it is stated that, "...generally, if one can find find the [White Ash], one can find colonies of this ant." I found that statement to be true, at least in this case. I'm gonna go back up into it tomorrow and crack open some more sticks, as apparently they not only live inside of dead twigs (which these ones were), but living ones too. I also accidentally stumbled upon a colony of Colobopsis obliqua while trying to find some sticks I could possibly turn into a nest for these ants. I noticed some holes that were the same shape and size as Colobopsis major heads, and I cracked the stick open. I was greeted with not only a few minors, but some males too! The colony contained many males, but no queen alates, and no queens in general. Must have just been a satellite nest.

If you go to the South Carolina Anting Thread, I posted the conditions for last night's Colobopsis flights. Both C. obliqua and C. mississippiensis flew.

Found a Strumigenys sp. queen with one worker under a rock today at about 68 degrees Fahrenheit, with 70% humidity. It rained the day before, which was probably why they were by the surface.

I got three Strumigenys sp. colonies today! And one Strumigenys louisianae with no queen. The three Strumigenys sp. 1 colonies are pretty large, with one having 15-20 workers and 3 queens, another having 35-40 workers and 4 queens, and the last with 100-115 workers and 5-6 queens. All have tons of larvae and eggs. :) Going out again for Strumigenys louisianae.

I'll have to get some! I would love a colony of typical Strumigenys. All I've had are S. membranifera and S. louisianae, which look far different from species like S. rostrata or S. ornata.

I should probably mention that I found a Strumigenys pilinasis dealate today. I was looking through mulch, flipping it over an what not, and to my left I noticed something move (it was on the undisturbed mulch). Thought it was a temnothorax worker, turned out to be this queen. I also know that a colony of these ants lives somewhere in that mulch, I really want to find them.
