I just found a two queen colony of Strumigenys!

Lucky! What did you find them in?

I love cryptic ants. I published a thread a while back, but it died kind of quickly. Good luck with your cryptic ant endeavors!

Do you keep any? Nearly nothing is known about their biology.

Cryptic Ants?

Cryptobiotic. these are generally small specialized ants adapted to live in dark conditions. Look up proceratium, strumigenys, stenamma, melissotarsus, cyphomyrmex, ect.

Seems we have a few of these in Maryland! I particularly like the Strumigenys their head shapes are awesome! Think they are too small for me to find though! :D

Currently keeping:

Camponotus chromaiodes

Camponotus castaneus

Formica subsericea

Strumigenys is the only trap jaw that has varied jaw sizes and shapes within one genus. :)

Well, other types do too, but they're not as variable as strumigenys.

what's a DM?

Also, found some hypoponera in a log by the coast at Dillons beach. Took some larvae and one has cocooned!

I have/had, as they seem to have disappeared, lots of Cardiocondyla in my backyard.  I have also found a Ponera sp. in my front yard.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

I believe I have found a ergatoid queen for the unknown orange hypoponera(opaciceps?). I excavated the spot she was in and no other ants, so this is the only viable conclusion I can think of.

She looks a little too much like a worker, though

ergatoid queens do not have large eyes and are like workers. Abdomen is small, though, and may be infertile or a stray worker that came from a really long tunnel.(Hopefully she is a fertile queen, though.)
