This is cheap and compact, while on special
It does not zap, the UV light attracts insects and traps them in the compartment below.
If I can figure out how to power it remotely it would be great to bring along to a tennis court that is near me on the edge of bushland at night :)
Should be able to attract and capture some critters and queens.

I wonder if the insects actually pass through the fan blades, it looks like they do.

yeah they do, I would disable it, add a fluon lined funnel into a big container box filled with egg crates for the queens to hide.

Then stick a white cloth  behind it as well :)

It sounds good to me! You can buy various power packs on eBay, very cheap if you put them together yourself, 18650 batteries can be a bit expensive though.

The models with fans are designed to kill insects by means of dessication, which can occur especially quickly in drier climates. Of course, it's certainly possible for the fan blades to harm the insects, as well.

Alternatively, there are fanless traps where the insects fall through a gravity funnel to be trapped inside the collection container. The funnel design is much better at keeping insects alive and unharmed, and is virtually as effective at collection as the fan-aided ones.
