Yeah, Acromyrmex flew last night and also probably today. Believe Scrixx was there last night.

 

I'll be heading out there tonight to look for Myrmecocystus and Pogonomyrmex. Don't have much interest in Acromyrmex at the moment. They just aren't worth the time and trouble. We'll let Drew figure them out, and maybe I'll buy one off him once he gets a colony going before he kills them off again

Ohhh, this means they flew yesterday too. They were still digging last night, so I figure they might still have their fungus, but if they actually flew yesterday, then they for sure have their fungus.

I checked the weather channel and it's supposed to rain in Joshua Tree next Sunday. That should make the following Monday (assuming rain does happen) a good time to go searching right?

Yeah it does look like more storm activity is forecast for the deserts Friday. These are usually isolated storms, so you never know exactly where one will hit, but if it hits in a spot where Acromyrmex are found, assuming they haven't already flown there, they will probably fly. There were a lot of other spots that hadn't seen any rain yet, but unfortunately they all got rain a few days later, just not enough to know for sure whether something flew or not. This will make it a bit of a gamble checking those areas if they get a lot of rain Friday.

 

Acromyrmex can be found all over the areas along the 10 freeway from Joshua Tree National Park south entrance (Cottonwood Springs Rd), all the way to Blythe, and all over up the 177 from Desert Center to the bend in the road. Don't bother looking anywhere West of Chiriaco Summit, because those have already flown.

Yeah, maybe I will go... Maybe. They seem like a really awesome ant species. But as I have never done this before... Maybe not so newb friendly?
