Yesterday I checked for nocturnal queens at 11:30 pm and didn’t find anything. Today I woke up to one of the spots I’ve checked and I found a big infertile queen(I believe Camponotus pennsylvanicus). I believe a nuptial flight happened when I was asleep. I have two question.
1. Where do I look for queens when they just had a nuptial flight
2. Is the infertile queen useless
There are three large trees behind the fence that separates my neighbors house. Along the perimeter I see c pennsylvanicus workers passing. Would newly mated queens only be in the trees. We have mulch on the ground on our side would that simulate rotting wood and queens would hide in there.
All help is much appreciated
