Among all the other things I photograph, I often take pictures of ant nests/colonies when I am out collecting. 

 

I thought I would share a few of my photos here, and maybe track how many species I can photograph on my upcoming trip to add.

That last one I think might be the same species as one of my favorite Myrmecocystus colonies.

Looks like Pogonomyrmex rugosus.

Looks like Pogonomyrmex rugosus.

 

 

Then maybe I am learning something.  I collected a few specimens from this spot, and that is what I keyed them out to.

 

More recently, I collected a few more along the south shores of Lake Isabella that looked very similar and also keyed out to P. rugosus

 

But alas, I did not get any pictures of that colony.

P. rugosus are pretty unique looking Pogonomyrmex because of their dark color.
